Importance of Sterilisation and managing stray dog populations.
Managing stray dog populations is important for several reasons, including public health, animal welfare, and environmental balance.
Many stray dogs suffer from starvation, injuries, and diseases due to a lack of medical care and proper nutrition. Managing the population ensures better living conditions for them. It also enhances the safety and well-being of the community.
Introduction to BCS Pune’s sterilsation program and its impact.
BCS Pune provides FREE sterilisation for stray dogs in Pune City. BCS Pune follows the 5-day sterilisation program.
Day 1 – The stray dogs are admitted at BCS Pune.
Day 2 – They are scheduled for surgery.
Day 3 and 4 – These are post-operative care and recovery days.
Day 5 – The stray dogs are returned to their original location once deemed fit by the vet.
Throughout the 5 days, the dogs receive proper care, daily vet check-ups, nutritious food, and necessary medications. This Free sterilisation program benefits the community and the volunteers as BCS does not charge them for the surgery of stray dogs.
Why Sterilisation is Essential for Stray Dogs?
Population Control – Sterilisation of stray dogs is the best and most humane way to control the stray dog population.
As stray dogs reproduce rapidly, leading to overpopulation sterilisation is the best way to control the stray dog population. Uncontrolled breeding results in more homeless puppies struggling to survive.
Reducing Aggressive Behaviour – Sterilisation decreases aggression and fights over mating, lowering injury risks. Sterilisation also reduces territorial fights among stray dogs.
Lowering Health Risks for Stray Dogs – Sterilisation reduces the spread of genetic diseases and infections. It also eliminates risks of life-threatening conditions like pyometra (uterine infection) in female dogs and testicular cancer in male dogs.
The Sterilisation Process
Stray dogs are caught in a safe and careful manner by a trained catching team. Once captured, the dogs are taken safely to the center for admission.
The next day once the vet deems them fit, the dogs are scheduled for the surgery.
The sterilization surgery is conducted in a very efficient and humane way.
Once the surgery is done the post-operative care starts. During post-operative care, the dogs are well taken care of. They are provided nutritious food and proper medication for a healthy and quick recovery. The recovery of every dog is monitored carefully by the vet and the staff daily.
On the 5th day, the dogs are released back to their original location once they are fit.
At BCS we follow the 5-day ABC program. The dogs are released on the 5th day only if they have completely recovered and are fit for release by the vet.
