IPD: Diagnosing and Treating Pets in Need of Hospitalization

In-patient Department (IPD) at Blue Cross Society of Pune

Our In-patient Department (IPD) operates with a very limited capacity. Currently, we can accommodate only 24 dogs and 6 cats for IPD. Our IPD is usually full of dogs and cats sent to us by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) team in response to citizen complaints, such as accidents, injuries, or illnesses. Consequently, our IPD is often at full capacity, leaving us unable to promptly admit animals brought in by rescuers or volunteers.

We deeply empathize with the plight of these stray animals and the individuals trying to help them. It saddens us to see a long queue of requests for IPD kennels, knowing that we are unable to accommodate more animals in need. In our efforts to address this issue, we have reached out to various companies, seeking support through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding to expand the capacity of our IPD. We are hopeful that someone will help us in this endeavor.

IPD charges are INR 5,000 for a 1-month stay for a dog or cat for treatment and it includes their food, stay, and treatment costs.
Diagnostics and Hematology costs are extra – we provide these services at very reasonable rates to support the welfare of stray animals. The admission payment has to be transferred on the admission day itself. Our staff will explain the admission procedure when you bring the stray dog or cat for admission to BCS. Please note admission is given only through email confirmation sent via [email protected]

Please do not walk in with a dog or cat for IPD admission as we are usually almost full and you will have to go back disappointed!

Emergency Care Services

At Blue Cross Society of Pune, we currently do not offer emergency services. Providing emergency services requires significant investment in the infrastructure, including a fleet of ambulances and the round-the-clock availability of medical staff, professionals, and drivers. The cost of maintaining this is considerably high. Additionally, hiring the right personnel for these roles is challenging and costly. Due to these financial and logistical constraints, we are unable to provide emergency care at this time.

Surgical Procedures

At Blue Cross Society of Pune Pune, we offer basic surgical procedures in the IPD. These surgeries include wound closure, hematoma treatment, tumor removal, amputation, and enucleation surgeries. Additionally, surgeries for VG and TVT are performed for dogs when deemed necessary.

Importance of surgical interventions in treating various medical conditions in stray dogs and pets

Cats and dogs require surgical interventions to treat a range of medical conditions to save their lives and improve their quality of life. Surgery plays a vital role in veterinary care.

  • Life-Saving Procedures: Often, surgeries become necessary to save the lives of animals suffering from internal injuries, severe trauma, or digestive tract obstructions.
  • Disease Management and Cure: Surgeries are necessary to treat serious conditions such as the removal of tumors, reparation of hernias, correction of heart defects, and fixing of broken bones and torn ligaments.
  • Prevention: Surgery also plays a preventive role, particularly in the form of spaying and neutering, which helps in the prevention of overpopulation, reduces the risk of certain cancers, and can eliminate behaviors related to mating instincts that might put the animal at risk.
  • Pain Relief: Surgical interventions are needed for immediate pain relief in cases such as ear infections, dental disease, and painful joint disorders.
  • Diagnosis: In some cases, surgery is essential for a definitive diagnosis. Procedures like biopsies, exploratory surgeries, or joint explorations are necessary to check on the further course of treatment and disease management.
  • Specialized Treatments: Minimal invasive procedures such as cardiac surgeries and neurosurgery are done for quick recovery and healthier living.

Surgeries play a crucial role in veterinary medicine and are expected to grow further in medical science to improve the health and wellness of animals.

Importance of Hospitalization

The critical role of hospitalization in the recovery process

For sick or injured dogs and cats, hospitalization is imperative for the healing process as it provides vital medical care that is not possible in any other environment.

In a hospital, they receive immediate medical assistance and round-the-clock monitoring, which is essential for stabilizing their health, controlling discomfort, and averting complications.

In a hospital you have immediate access to critical care, including IV fluids, medication, and nutrition, given under careful observation. For illnesses that can quickly worsen or are complex this controlled setting allows necessary adjustments to therapies based on the animal’s reactions.

It provides access to medical supplies and diagnostic equipment enabling precise examinations and continuous assessments. The controlled environment of a hospital also minimizes stress for injured or ill pets, as they are kept in quiet, comfortable, and controlled spaces designed to aid recovery. Additionally, the presence of skilled veterinary professionals ensures that any signs of distress or complication are swiftly identified and addressed.

Overall, hospitals play a critical role in treating severe medical conditions in animals and significantly increasing their prospects of recovery.

Timely medical attention and hospitalization when needed

All pet owners, volunteers, and caregivers of stray dogs and cats must understand the significance of prompt medical intervention and hospitalization. Early and timely intervention can make all the difference in their health and well-being. Whether it’s an obvious behavioral change, injury indicators, or disease symptoms, responding quickly can help avoid problems and improve health outcomes.

If your cat or dog doesn’t seem to be okay, don’t hesitate to get professional help, as it may need specialized trained professionals and equipment that are accessible only in a medical setting. Hospitalization may seem overwhelming, but it’s necessary to provide pets or stray animals with critical care when they require it.

Your proactiveness can save the lives of these animals and greatly improve their quality of life.
