Stray dogs deserve love and care and a chance to lead a better life. Often, due to the hardships they face on the street, they are malnourished, sick, or injured.
BCS Pune was formed in 1994 to help stray dogs and cats and ensure that they receive the necessary medical care and treatment. We provide free stray dog sterilisation and vaccinations (anti-rabies for both dogs and cats, 9-in-1 for dogs, and Tri-Cat for cats) for them to live a longer, healthier life. Our other services include:

Sterilisation for Stray Cats – Cat sterilisation cost is Rs.1000 per stray cat (male/female) with 7 days post operative care.
Diagnostics and Hematology – Blood tests ( CBC, LFT, and KFT ) are charged atnominal cost. X- rays are also charged at low cost.

Understanding the Stray Dog Problem
There are thousands of homeless cats and dogs living on the streets or in shelters in India. Pune’s street dogs are estimated at 179,000 lacs as per the 2023 report (Hindustan Times).
Stray dog populations are seen mostly in urban areas; this is commonly due to poor garbage management. The abundance of improperly disposed garbage becomes the hunting ground for stray dogs. The dense human population in urban areas also increases the incidence of more pets being abandoned, which further contributes to the stray dog population. And poor administration of stray dog management, either due to misuse of funds, policies or a lack of resources, leads to ineffective sterilisation and vaccination programs.
Services Offered by BCSPune.org
At BCS, we provide FREE anti-rabies vaccines (ARV) to all stray dogs, cats, and pet dogs and cats.
Our goal is to establish herd immunity by vaccinating both stray and pet dogs and cats, thereby drastically lowering the chances of rabies transmission.
To aid in rabies prevention, we periodically conduct anti-rabies vaccination drives focusing on sterilised and friendly stray dogs throughout Pune city.
For ARV vaccination for a stray dog or cat or your pet dog or cat please visit us at BCS OPD
Between 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday to Saturday
For ARV drives in your area please write to us at [email protected]
At BCS we offer FREE sterilisation for stray dogs including free post-operative care. Sterilisation of stray dogs benefits the community by preventing stray dogs from reproducing and reducing the number of homeless animals.
This leads to fewer instances of dog bites and the spread of diseases like rabies. Sterilisation also curbs aggressive behaviors linked to mating instincts, such as territorial fights and biting, creating a safer and healthier environment for both humans and animals.
And we also provide stray cat (male and female) sterilisation at a nominal cost of INR 1000 per cat. It includes 7-day post-operative care period for all cats.
Community Involvement
As a volunteer, you can support sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs and cats in your community with the help of local NGOs that provide sterilisation of stray dogs and cats either for free or at nominal rates. You can organise drives in your area with the help of other volunteers and create awareness amongst the community regarding the benefits of sterilisation of stray dogs and cats.
You could help BCS with adoption drives by raising awareness about these drives on your personal social media platforms. Inform your friends, family, and colleagues about the importance of adopting stray dogs/cats and encourage adoption of stray dogs/cats instead of buying them.
You could offer to foster these dogs by providing temporary homes, where they find love and care and learn social skills that aid in their successful adoptions. And certainly, you can also volunteer to walk the dogs, provide them with food and help in rescue operations. All these efforts by volunteers directly and positively impact the lives of stray dogs and cats.
How Individuals Can Help
At BCS, we are dedicated to improving the lives of stray dogs and cats by providing compassionate and comprehensive care. Your support is vital to us.
We welcome donations, both monetary and in-kind, to sustain and expand our efforts. Every contribution, big or small, makes a significant difference.
Donate Funds
Your financial support helps us provide medicine, food, and treatment for our in-house and IPD dogs and cats.
Donate In-Kind
We accept donations of dog and cat food (both wet and dry), cat litter, and other essential items like cardboard, newspapers, bedsheets, collars, and leashes.
To support us, please contact us at [email protected] for more information on making a donation.
Your volunteer support in the form of time, raising awareness within the community about the importance of stray dog and cat sterilisation and vaccination, and showing compassion towards these animals can truly help these voiceless beings.
Many times, we have volunteers and rescuers who bring injured or sick stray dogs and cats to BCS-free OPD for treatment. Their efforts and kindness towards these animals are invaluable to us and to these helpless beings.
Success Stories
Tommy/Raja, a beautiful dog, was abandoned at BCS OPD by his owner/caretaker. He was admitted in an unconscious state; his nose was bleeding. When BCS tried to contact the owner, he refused to acknowledge the dog.
This beautiful white dog was diagnosed with tick fever and was unable to walk.
At BCS, his treatment commenced, and after a few months, Raja started recovering.
With the right treatment and care, he regained his strength and was able to walk again. Once he was fit, he was sterilised. The BCS team contacted the owner again as the dog had recovered, and the owner/caregiver came to take this boy back to his location.
Lily was a part of a beautiful pack of puppies who got to BCS along with their mother.
She was the most different pup among the litter. She had a white coat with black speckles on it and a big black ear. A cute little pup scampered around the BCS backyard.
When the pups were put up for adoption, Lily was chosen by one of the adopters.
Now Lily is living a happy life with her new forever family.
Our goal at BCS is to help stray dogs and cats live better, healthier lives. We would be forever grateful to those who are willing to join and support us with their time or efforts.

Conclusion
Individuals and the community can support each other to help the stray dogs and the community as a whole. A simple act of providing regular food and water can positively impact their lives, while ensuring the dogs are sterilised will help in management of their population. Volunteering at shelters or NGOs, fostering dogs, or assisting in adoption drives can be extremely helpful.
Creating community awareness campaigns about the importance of sterilisation and vaccination, responsible pet ownership, and encouraging adoption of rescued dogs can go a long way in building a safer and better environment for stray dogs.
