A regular healthy diet significantly improves their overall health; it reduces their roaming, makes them calmer, and decreases their aggressive behaviour.

Stray dogs and humans we share the same eco-system; by providing regular meals to the stray dogs, we can reduce their aggressive behaviour connected to hunger and foster more peaceful co-existence. And also, while feeding the stray dogs is important, getting them sterilised is even more important as it ensures that they are healthy and their population is controlled. Every person who are feeding stray dogs could safeguard the wellbeing of these stray dogs if they are sterilised and timely vaccinated.

Stray dogs rely on food that has been thrown from human settlements; it often consists of rotten and spoiled bones, rice, fruits, and other food items, these foods lack nutrition and hygiene but unfortunately the dogs have no their options so they have to eat this for their survival. A balanced diet needs to be comprised of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins to maintain a healthy life. Even if we can’t provide two meals a day, one meal a day is also good for the dog as long as it has the required nutrients and is easily digestible.
Best Foods for Feeding Stray Dogs
You can feed stray dogs with dog food, either dry or wet, which is nutritious and high in protein and minerals. You can also feed them homemade food, such as cooked rice with chicken, boiled chicken and eggs, and cooked rice with vegetables; avoid adding salt and spices. All these food items can be rich sources of vitamins and minerals that will help them thrive in their environment.
What to Avoid When Feeding Stray Dogs
There are certain human foods that should be avoided and not given to dogs. Food items such as chocolates contain theobromine; it’s toxic for dogs. Others include onion, garlic, and nutmeg, which are harmful to dogs. Also, avoid feeding grapes, raisins, and products containing xylitol, such as baked foods, mints, etc. It can be extremely dangerous if consumed by dogs.
Snacks like Parle G biscuits should be given judiciously, as they contain a high level of sugar and do not have any nutritional value. Always feed dog-friendly food, and if you have any doubts, consult a veterinarian for guidance.
How to Feed Stray Dogs Safely
You can set up a clean, quiet, and safe area to feed stray dogs away from traffic and place the food in durable and easy-to-clean bowls.
Make sure to offer clean water for their consumption and change it regularly for cleanliness.
Approach stray dogs calmly, and do not startle them. Once you have placed the food in their bowl, move away from that place so that they don’t feel threatened. Do not pet stray dogs and make them overly friendly as they may start expecting the same level of affection from everyone and not all humans like dogs. So, for the safety of stray dogs, we must also maintain a distance from them, unless we intent to bring them home to foster or adopt.

It’s essential that there are designated areas to feed stray dogs that are kept clean, and once the feeding is done, ensure the leftover food is cleaned to avoid mess or pest invasion.
With feeding comes the responsibility of ensuring the dogs are sterilised and vaccinated regularly against rabies.
